More About Emergency Medicine

The curriculum spans four years. Registrars are expected to rotate through numerous hospitals in order to gain a broad based experience. Currently there are two rotation sites; Pietermartizburg (Edendale hospital) and Empangeni (Ngwelezane hospital). A minimum of 18 months of the rotation is done in Specialist led Emergency Departments that provide constant supervision and on site training. Registrars are expected to pass a primary exam (FCEM 1), complete the CEMSA Emergency Ultrasound (EFAST) course and accreditation, complete the MMed (research component) and pass the final exit exam (FCEM2).
